The Power of Positive Words

Editor: Phil Minnaar 01 July 2009

Preparing to be prepared

There are good examples of preparedness in nature. Squirrels gather seeds during the summer to have food in winter. Rabbits’ hair change from brown in summer to white in winter to be less visible to predators. Trees shed their leaves in the fall to prevent loss of water through their leaves in winter. They are all preparing to handle the event of winter.

We also have to prepare for planned events and for unanticipated events.

An event can be any kind of occurrence. It can be a planned event such as a wedding or departing on a flight. An event can also be an unplanned event, such as, for example, fire and flooding. Events can also be anticipated events that can be foreseen to happen in the future, based on trends, such as in the prices of houses. All of these events require preparedness.

To prepare for an event we must first visualize the event, for example a wedding, from beginning to end. We have to think it through and ask specific questions such as the following: What is our budget? What will be needed? Who will supply it? Who will do what? Who will be invited? For each question we must then decide on the best possible options. The third step is to put the options into practice, to start doing what needs to be done and to ensure that it has been done

The Front Page of my book

A book can be published through a publisher or it can be self-published. I chose the option of self-publishing. This meant that I had to do everything, finding an editor, formatting the manuscript, designing the front page and finding a printer.

For the front page I had to symbolise a positive attitude. How do you symbolise an abstract concept, such as attitude? My immediate thought was blue sky with white clouds. To me that symbolises 'looking up' and seeing unlimited possibilities. This has been captured in the photo on the front page of the book. . I also had to decide on a slogan. I wrote down the old expression ‘The sky is the limit!’ but realised that there are space stations beyond the sky. The expression ‘The sky is the limit’ is outdated. The sky is not the limit anymore. I therefore decided that the right slogan for the positive content of my book is: The Sky is unlimited!

The Word of the Month from the Positive Dictionary

Going through the alphabet, our word for this month starts with the letter ‘D.’ The positive word for this month is the word ‘develop.’ The word ‘develop’ is explained as follows in The Positive Dictionary:

Develop: Develop a positive attitude as a way of life. * Development causes growth and fulfillment.’

A positive attitude in life is the gateway to success, fulfilment and happiness.

Each person’s attitude is, on average, somewhere on a range between very negative and very positive. There are many negative impacts that push us towards the negative side. It is up to us to continuously develop a stronger positive attitude to handle the negative influences in our lives and to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.

We can develop a positive attitude by:

  • * accepting that work requires effort;
  • * being bold to do things we thought was impossible;
  • * caring for people around us,
  • * deciding after careful deliberation;
  • * embracing a cause in which we believe;
  • * forgiving people who have hurt us
  • * giving from the heart;
  • * hoping that good things will come.
  • Positive Acrostic: Develop

  • D: Develop a positive attitude;
  • E: Encourage people to grow;
  • V: Volunteer to assist;
  • E: Embark on a new venture;
  • L: Learn all you can about your project;
  • O: Overcome all the obstacles;
  • P: Prepare for the unexpected.
